Myelin integrity in older adults with vascular cognitive impairment: Implications for mobility performance

چکیده
Abstract Background In individuals prone to white matter pathology, such as older adults with vascular cognitive impairment (VCI), myelin loss could contribute mobility impairment. Using water fraction (MWF), an in‐vivo technique quantify content in the brain, we investigated whether is associated performance VCI. Method We analyzed cross‐sectional data from thirty‐two subjects MRI‐evidence of subcortical ischemic VCI who underwent 3T MRI scanning protocol at UBC Research Centre (mean [SD], age = 73.8 [5.4], MoCA score 21.3 [3.8], 65.8% female). The consisted a standard T1‐weighted contrast for acquisition high‐resolution structural data, and gradient spin echo (GRASE) MWF data. Gait speed (meters/second) collected via 4‐meter walking test was used measure performance. Following preprocessing pipeline using FMRIB Software Library, were computed whole‐brain matter, fifteen specific structures interest. images processed FreeSurfer determine estimated intracranial volume (eICV). Hierarchical regression models adjusting eICV conducted lower slower gait speed. Result only, superior longitudinal fasciculus (unstandardized B [95% CI] 3.287 [0.052 6.523], R 2 Change 0.130, p 0.047). Adjusting scores attenuated this relationship 3.055 [‐0.155 6.265], 0.111, 0.061). Conclusion To our knowledge, first study investigate linked poor population. Our findings suggest that integrity tracts brain may be decline Understanding mechanisms by which leads step towards developing strategies prevent downstream unwanted health outcomes falls, hospitalizations, independence.

Prevalence of Cognitive Impairment in Community-Dwelling Older Adults
Introduction: Mild cognitive impairment can be considered as an intermediate clinical state between normal cognitive aging and mild dementia. Elderly people with this impairment represent an at-risk group for the development of dementia. The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of cognitive impairment in community-dwelling older adults by Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) and ...
متن کاملSocietal costs of vascular cognitive impairment in older adults.
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE The construct of vascular cognitive impairment (VCI) includes many whose care is or will be costly. Nevertheless, estimates of these costs are not well described. We therefore set out to estimate the societal costs of VCI in elderly people. METHODS In a secondary analysis of the Canadian Study of Health and Aging, a representative cohort study, Canadian dollar costs usi...

Cognition is a highly sophisticated, multifactorial, interrelated set of neurologic functions responsible for attention, perception, memory, learning, language, and thinking. One’s ability to perceive, recognize, register, store, and use information represents distinct entities of cognition.[1] Illness, medical therapies, and the aging process can negatively affect cognition. ADMINISTERING THE ...
متن کاملCaregivers of Older Adults With Cognitive Impairment
INTRODUCTION Because of the growing number of caregivers and the awareness of related health and quality-of-life issues, caregiving has emerged as an important public health issue. We examined the characteristics and caregiving experiences of caregivers of people with and without cognitive impairment. METHODS Participants (n = 668) were adults who responded to the 2005 North Carolina Behavior...
